The P1 was hailed in the early 90’s as the “pan-European solution”. The “Global System of Mobile Communication” (GSM) was put into operation by Mannesmann D2 and Deutsche Telekom in 1992. No-one back then would have believed that GSM was to become the leading mobile radio standard today used by one in nine people across the globe.
But the mobile phone that made the first GSM users accessible across national boundaries still looked very much like a suitcase with a handset attached – not least owing to the massive battery weighing a pound. Nevertheless, you could communicate on the move around Europe with your 2,200-gram (4.84 lbs) luggage with its voice-controlled handsfree talking facility, speed-dialing key, electronic phone book, wide-angle display, 2 hours’ talk time, and up to 12 hours’ standby time.
